For anyone who cares, I’m working on a 2011 mix, a short text piece that explains why such a project is worthless, and a list of books I read and liked (or not) in 2011.  These things probably won’t appear until next week since I’ll be traveling to Tennessee this weekend.

I say just write about the books you really liked. Or hated.

My 2011

I got accepted to grad schools.

I quit one of my jobs.

I saw U2 in concert, years after I was a huge fan. I’m still a huge fan of what they used to do. The concert was pretty stupendous.

My contract ended for my other job.

I started volunteering at the library.

My grandpa died after a long, drawn-out period of deterioration.

I made soap for the first time.

I moved closer to DC. I also got a new roommate.

I started grad school.

I reunited with my great aunt (my grandpa’s sister) in Florida.

Learned about lots of fun library-related sources and things.

I made a ridiculous resolution last year to “be more awesome” this year. Sadly, right now is not the time of year when I am typically awesome (winter). S.A.D. is fun like that. My thinking is very unsubtle and I am generally unmotivated.

Making soap could qualify as awesome, but I did that back in the summer. General awesomeness should be a little more consistent than once a year to be valid, IMO. Writing more and better this year would be a plus. Getting the easel out of its box that I got as a present a couple of years ago might also be next year’s project. And maybe I’ll memorize a few poems so as to delight people at parties.

“For to survive in the mouth of this dragon we call america, we have had to learn this first and most vital lesson — that we were never meant to survive. Not as human beings. And neither were most of you here today, Black or not. And that visibility which makes us most vulnerable is that which also is the source of our greatest strength. Because the machine will try to grind you into dust anyway, whether or not we speak. We can sit in our corners mute forever while our sisters and our selves are wasted, while our children are distorted and destroyed, while our earth is poisoned; we can sit in our safe corners mute as bottles, and we will still be no less afraid.” —Audre Lorde, “Transformation of Silence,” from Sister Outsider.

Slowly, slowly beginning to favor coffee over tea in the morning. December is a terrible month.

“Fishman and her husband, along with poet Richard Meier, run a 12-acre “Poetry Farm” in southern Wisconsin, offering summer internships for poets that exchange accommodations for farm labor. Fishman has taught at Beloit College and Columbia College Chicago.” —This sounds like a feasible internship for an ordinary person, unlike most internships in far-off places. Not that I’m considering it, I just think more people should know about it (if it is in fact still on offer).

I don’t believe this hunger strike in DC is getting nearly enough press. These five have been fasting for more than a week now, and they’re demanding that Congress pass H.R. 266 (which grants DC a voting House rep and 2 voting senators) before they will stop. The Tea Party’s got nothing on these guys.

i kind of had bad feelings about pruning folks i know in real life, who always let their twitter account languish. but i pruned them good this time.

Yeah, I pruned people a while back who clearly never use Twitter. I doubt they’ll even notice. The real problem is the 100+ who update frequently, all of whom have interesting or relevant links or things to say. They are making my brain explode.

I just had an unnecessarily gleeful, Nelson Muntz-filled five minutes realizing that I was a better writer than this other person who is a writer and editor in NY. Back to Earth now.

my twitter feed often gets out of hand.

We need to join forces and have a pruning party. *snip snip*
